What Can I Use on My Itchy Scalp? DIY Anti-Itch Scalp Spray.

Do you have an itchy scalp? Perhaps you have always struggled with a dry scalp, as I have. However when I decided to Loc my hair, there was a phase that went from mild itchiness to almost unbeatable. Especially in between washes. Similar to switching from commercial deodorant to all natural, when I became natural, I noticed I needed to take care of my hair differently. This mix is a spray that I use on my scalp and hair to soothe the dryness and itchiness.

First lets go over the ingredients and why I use them. That way if you want to ubstitue an item for another you can do so.

The Ingredients:

Distilled Water- I use Distilled Water in the spray because Hard Water (Tap Water) can cause scales on your hair follicle as well as build up on your scalp. I usually already have some on hand and I just use a small amount to limit the impurities added to my scalp

Witch Hazel – I found that adding the Witch Hazel was key in reducing the itching and reducing dry patches. It is known to relieve inflammation, reduce skin irritation. ward off infection and alleviate scalp sensitivity. It also leaves a feeling of a mini-wash freshener. Especially if you have starter locs or it has been recommended that you reduce the time in between shampoos.

Peppermint Essential Oil = Oh so soothing peppermint oil. It is a scalps friend. Peppermint oil helps to absorb excess oils on your scalp, moisturizes a dry scalp and promotes hair growth it has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties, and it soothes an itchy scalp while keeping dandruff at bay. I just love this stuff!

Jojoba Oil – Jojoba Oil mimics your skins natural oils. It is a great benefit to most skin care products and can be used alone. It also makes a great carrier oil for essential oils. It is light, skin loving and a perfect companion oil to help calm your scalp.

Vegetable Glycerin or Honey- This is up to you. Some do not like the idea of using honey in their hair. Although it has wonderful healing properties and like the vegetable glycerin is a natural humectant.

The Mix-

1 oz Distilled Water

1 oz Witch Hazel

5 drops Peppermint Oil

2 tablespoons Jojoba

1/2 teaspoon Honey or Glycerin.

Add ingredients to spray bottle and shake..

Shake well before each use. Can be used on wet or dry hair. Applying directly after a shower is optimal as your pores are open.

Hope this helps someone find as much relief as it has for me. This receive should work for all hair types. Try a test patch prior to first full use.

  1. Thanks for sharing information for a dry scalp. I definitely will try it, because all of your other products have worked so well.
I’ve been using the salves for my mosquito and spider bites. Both the all purpose and the breath one salves work for me.
Can’t wait to see what’s coming for fall!

  2. Hi! Thankyou for sharing this information i have a question regarding this can you please share the procedure of applying this i mean when to apply?can we apply it at night till morning?

    1. Hi Farzana
I usually apply directly to scalp with a spray bottle. However I do not oversaturate and shake the bottle to make sure it is well mixed. In addition I periodically use ands a light mist on my locs just to freshen them up a bit.

I usually do an all over scalp spray however I will also give a quick shot to a particular spot if it is really bothersome.

      Thanks for your question.
Let me know how it turns out.

    1. Hi Fatima:
Thanks for your question. Jojoba oil is one of the oils that mimics the natural oils that your skin produces. So it works really well on dry skin in general. So scalp, face even the skin underneath beards. Dandruff is different in that you need to also consider the reason the dandruff is there, is it dry scalp or psoriasis. You might get better information from a Dermatologist as to the why and then research natural remedies for that particular situation. Also take a look at our Shampoo BarShampoo BarShampoo Bar with Rhassoul Clay. Rhassoul Clay is great as it clarifies your hair and lift debris off your scalp without stripping all of the natural oils from your scalp.

      Have a great day!
I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

    1. Hi Hurmat:
Thanks for the questions. I use as needed. So usually if my scalp is itchy or a day or two after I wash it tends to be dry. I will use it then and leave on. I have locs so I also use to moisten my hair if I’m styling. I also use on my girls when I am styling their loose natural hair. I hope this answers your questions. Let me know if you have any more.
