Hazel's Soapery Do It Yourself Clay Hair Mask Recipe

If you are anything like me one thing that your hair craves is moisture. The question then becomes how do I moisturize it and what products should i buy? Let’s be honest there are a lot of amazing choices out there for you to buy. However, did you know that you can make an easy peasey lemon squeezy Hair Mask right from home?

This is a recipe that I use on my daughters hair which are all loose natural and one that I use on my hair which is locked. We all have different grades and textures and it works well for all of us. So my suggestion to everyone is to try it once and see how you like it. It is really basic and you probably have the main ingredients at home already. If you try it and you don’t like it. Its not a waste of money because all of the ingredients can be used for so many things when it comes to natural skin care.

So what are we going to need?

Plain Mayonnaise (Not Miracle Whip, this might be a good use for the Mayo packets you have in the drawer)

Plain Mayo great for sealing ends of hair and adding shine

Tea Tree Oil (Can sub for Peppermint Oil, Ylang Ylang, or Lavender Oil)

Rhassoul Clay (Can be purchased online or at most vitamin stores. I recently saw it in our local hair store, its OK to try without if you don’t have any on hand or Bentonite Clay can be used as a sub)

Jojoba Oil (Can sub Grapeseed or Carrot Oil)

Argon Oil (Can sub Apricot or Olive)

Why did we choose each ingredient?

Mayonnaise is great for helping you seal in moisture, shine and and softness. Keep in mind if you a trying to stay away from Soybean products, most mayo contains soy. So look for brands like “Just Mayo” that are soy-free.

Tea Tree Oil can be found in so many products today because it is actually good for your skin. It is a natural anti inflammatory and antibacterial oil It is said that Tea tree oil can help with various ailments, such as dandruff and hair loss. While some people will add it directly to their hair and skin, I always dilute with a Carrier Oil. When making this mask I tend to use Tea Tree Oil on my Teens hair. However I prefer Peppermint oil on my locs (I’ve tried both and it is just a matter of preference). As with all DIY recipes. I always recommend that you do test patch of Essential Oils if it is your first time using them. Just to see how your skin will react and I never use straight oils on my skin. They are always diluted.

Rhassoul Clay cleanses scalp, retains moisture

Rhassoul Clay has been used for centuries for both skin and hair care. It provide a great clean, removing your scalp of excess oil and dirt while adding moisture at the same time. This is a great addition to your hair mask and we also have a shampoo bar made with Rhassoul Clay called Refresh My Hair, in the event you don’t have Rhassoul Clay on hand or would love an all natural shampoo bar. Its also convenient for travel.

Jojoba Oil mimics the natural oil of your skin. This is really good if you suffer from a dry scalp and want to add an oil that is not overly heavy and will be easily absorbed by your scalp and help retain your hairs moisture.

Argon Oil- assists with hydrating as well as softening your hair. It contains Vitamin E. fatty acids that are essential, and antioxidants. All of which help with shine and elasticity.

So now that all of that is said and done. Here come the easy part.

Now I mix this as needed and for a one time use. So depending on the length and thickness of your hair you might have to make more or less.

Clay Hair Mask Recipe

In a glass or plastic bowl using a wooden on plastic spoon mix the following. (Clays and essential oils can react to metal)

  • 5 drops Tea Tree
  • 1 teaspoon Rhassoul Clay
  • 10 drops Jojoba
  • 10 drops Argon
  • Mix together well. Let sit until room temperature.

How to Use

Shampoo hair

Place mask on well shampooed damp hair.

Cover hair with mask.

Place shower cap (plastic grocery bag) over hair and let sit for 30 minutes to an hour.*

Rinse with warm/cool water.

*If your hair is uncovered and the Rhassoul Clay starts to harden, rinse your hair with warm/cool water do not agitate until it is loose.

That’s it! Like I said in the beginning easy peasy lemon squezzy. If you or your family has dry hair or its just dull and lackluster give this a try you might just find out that everything your hair needs is right at home. This is a great time to try it also, especially if you are like my kids and are in the pool all summer.

Hey once you give it a go come back and tell me what you think! I hope you love it as much as we do!
